As the CEO of 7 Worlds Ag, Ben’s journey from a farming family in McLaren Vale to building a leading horticultural supplier is a story of grit, growth, and great people. Two main things have shaped both his life and his leadership, listening and giving it a go.
Two Ears, One Mouth | A Foundation for Growth
“It’s a bit of a cliché, but we’re born with two ears and one mouth,” Ben says. “Listening to our customers has been key to building strong relationships and growing the business.”
Since joining Grochem Australia (now 7 Worlds Ag) as its first employee in 2016, Ben has seen the business grow 14-fold. From an office with two partitions and a handful of products, to a portfolio of over 120 products servicing growers across Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and South Korea, listening has been central every step of the way.
Taking the Leap | Building Something from the Ground Up
After 14 years with Nufarm in sales, marketing, and business development roles, Ben jumped at the chance to help launch Grochem Australia.
“Compared to working at a large international company, it was back to basics. We had to create a strategy, build a product portfolio, and form a team that could deliver value to growers.”
The acquisition of Melpat International in 2017 added a range of fungicides to the mix, and the business has only grown stronger since.
A Team that Digs In
Ben is quick to credit the team for 7 Worlds Ag’s success, sharing – “Our people are our great strength. We’ve hand-picked a team that genuinely cares about customers and the horticulture industry. Everyone gives 120% and that’s what sets us apart.”
In a competitive space filled with large global players, Ben believes the company’s agility, customer focus, and passion for innovation are what make the difference.
Why the Name Change?
In 2024, Grochem Australia rebranded to 7 Worlds Ag, a move that reflects the company’s evolving identity and commitment to horticulture.
“Building for the future was behind the change. We’re proud that the new name and branding have been so well received by growers and distributors alike.”
Learning from the Land
Ben’s own story starts on the land. His parents made the bold decision to leave McLaren Vale and establish a broadacre farming operation in Moonie, southwest Queensland.
“Clearing virgin country with bulldozers and a chain… they taught us the importance of giving things a go, learning from setbacks, and following through on your commitments.”
Ben went on to study agronomy and agribusiness, gaining early business experience in his family’s Sunshine Coast convenience stores during holidays.
From First Job to First Big Break
Ben’s agricultural career began in 1999 with JH Williams in the turf and seed division, before joining Nufarm in 2002. It was a steep learning curve, managing 145 products and a diverse grower base from Bundaberg to Biloela.
He later took on horticulture roles in Swan Hill, Victoria and Tasmania, before becoming national horticulture manager. The diverse crops, changing challenges, and the opportunity to innovate kept him hooked on the industry.
In 2016, Ben took the plunge and joined Grochem, ready to build something new.
Challenges, Opportunities, and Staying Nimble
Today, Ben thrives in the fast-paced environment of a smaller company.
“We’re nimble. We’re accountable. Everyone digs in. And we’re always asking, what can we do better than anyone else?”
With unique chemistries, strong grower relationships, and a dedicated R&D team led by Orville Hildebrand, 7 Worlds Ag continues to solve real challenges in horticulture.
Eyes on the Horizon
Ben sees biosecurity as one of the biggest threats facing the industry.
“Varroa mite has shown how vulnerable we are. Red blight is just across the Tasman. We can’t afford to be complacent.”
He also notes the impact of consolidation in distribution and the rise of vertical integration, but remains focused on what he and the team can control, stating – “I believe in setting clear, simple goals and keeping our focus on what matters—our growers, our team, and the future of horticulture.”
